Gelli® Printing & Collage

Gelli® Printing & Collage: Make your own printed textured paper without a printing press! We will explore various printing techniques using Gelli® plates that are simple and can be done right at home. We will then use this paper for 2 collage projects. Project samples will be provided.

Materials List:

Students will need to purchase their own 5x7 or 8x10 Gelli® plate.

You can purchase Gelli® plates at: Michael's, Amazon or Blick.

All other supplies will be provided by instructor.

Poured Acrylic Workshop

Welcome to the colorful world of poured acrylic painting! Also known as fluid art, this technique creates mesmerizing and beautiful paintings. No two are the same, even when the same colors are used. In this course, you’ll be guided by an experienced fluid artist to learn the basics of poured acrylic and get your very own paintings to take home (after they’ve dried for a day). We’ll go through several pour techniques that result in stunningly different designs. Not only will you learn the fundamentals of fluid art, you’ll be given valuable tips and tricks you can’t get from videos or trying it at home. 

All materials will be provided.

Full Course

Intro To Soldering (Jewelry)

$125

Four Saturdays | April 11 – May 2 | 10:00AM -12:30PM | Materials Fee $35

Ready to kick up your metalsmithing skills? Then it’s time to start using the torch! We’ll learn how to use fire to solder metal joints with a butane torch in this 2.5-hour weekly class. Projects will include copper/brass saddle rings and pendants. Prior experience in sawing and filing metal will help. Must be 21 and older. Materials fee $35.

Brief

The course will start with a safety demonstration of the torch, and an introduction to types of solder, flux, pickling and to soldering tools. You’ll then design your pieces of jewelry and learn how to melt solder to attach two pieces of metal. You’ll have of time to practice with the torch before committing to your final projects. After firing, learn how to clean up your piece and make it shine!

Plein air Pastel Painting at the Jersey Shore

Instructor Gina Torello has designed this Plein Air Pastel Painting Class in the heart of our iconic downtown Asbury Park and Ocean Grove New Jersey. Perspective lessons will take place out on the streets of our local quaint towns. She will demonstrate each session as everyone follows along painting the same subject matter as she instructs from inception to completion. Each painting may take two weeks from start to finish. Lessons will be on the Carousel in Asbury Park, the Tent City in Ocean Grove and the Convention Hall all while painting alongside with a master PleinAir artist. This is a one of a kind experience all local artist do not want to pass up. The first 12 Artists will be supplied with a New Wave Pochade Easel to use during your exclusive lessons down in these quaint seashore towns and a comfortable PleinAir chair to use as you paint. This pleasurable and rewarding class will cover compositional structure, color theory, application of materials and most of all the process of capturing the LIGHT in the open air like the Impressionists. All levels of pastel painting artists are welcomed. I will email everyone prior to our first class via JSAC email to inform you on our first location.

Oil Painting Techniques

Six Thursdays | April 16- May 21 | 9:00- 11:00am | $145

Come join Gina Torello’s new and exciting Oil Painting class. Artists will gain confidence learning the proper techniques and application of all their materials. Through this hands-on course, students will learn diverse oil painting styles as well as various master’s techniques. We will cover concepts such as working lean to fat, impasto, alla prima, under painting and of course use of color theory designed specific for each image. Two paintings will be completed within the six week course and artists will be challenged, encouraged and empowered throughout the course. Finished paintings will be 5”x7”, 6”x8” or 8”x10” in size and reference photographs will be provided by your instructor. All levels are always welcome. A supply list will be provided below.

Acrylic Afternoons

All Levels Welcome

Sign up for this popular class and join a relaxing atmosphere where all skill levels are welcome! Learn or "brush"-up on the basic techniques of acrylic painting. Students will have the opportunity to create a complete piece of artwork each class with the step by step guidance of the instructor.  The class will paint from photos of  landscapes, seascapes, and nature.    

The course will cover proportion, composition, color mixing, blending, brush techniques, and provide painters with practical tips and tricks.  

Materials List:

Acrylic paint and other supplies can be purchased at the following for very good prices:

Acrylic Paint: Brand names are Golden, Liquitex. (Michael’s brand is Artist’s Loft)  Colors you will need: Phthalo Blue, Titanium White, Mars Black, Raw Sienna, Brilliant Yellow, Deep Red.  

Or Primary Blue, Red, and Yellow if you would like to learn about color mixing

Brushes: Inexpensive acrylic brush set (flat and round shaped, various sizes from an inch to a quarter inch wide.)   

Canvas:  6 pack 12x16 stretched canvases (Michael’s seems to have the best price)

Other Tools: A palette (you can use paper plates or buy a reusable plastic one), rags or paper towels, palette knife, small spray bottle (for water.)

Always wear old clothes, coveralls or an apron that can get dirty. You’ll need a way to safely transport wet paintings, as there is no storage at the JSAC. One option is to bring a cardboard box or a flat piece of cardboard large enough to put a painting on without the wet surface touching anything. 

Please bring a roll of paper towels to each class.

Basic Drawing Tuesdays

We will also explore various mediums, including pencils, pastels and watercolor. Students of all levels will enjoy an inspiring, judgment-free atmosphere while receiving guidance and encouragement to enhance your skills.

Watercolor Tuesdays

We are very excited to have local artist, MaryAnn Goodwin teaching watercolor at the Jersey Shore Arts Center!

Reserve your spot in this fun, relaxing and informative class.  MaryAnne will be teaching old and new watercolor techniques along with some color theory.  This is the perfect atmosphere for beginners and for those intermediate watercolorists that want to continue and build on their watercolor experience and knowledge.

Materials:

Water Color Paints:

Cadmium Yellow Medium, Yellow Ochre, Cadmium Red Medium, Alizarin Crimson, Sap Green, Hookers’ Green, Cerulean Blue, Cobalt Blue, Ultramarine Blue, Violet, Burnt Sienna, Burnt Umber, Paynes Gray.

Brushes: (Make sure they are watercolor brushes not oil or acrylic.)

Large 1”inch flat Large 12 round. Medium 6-8 round, fine 2 -0 round.

Paper: 140lb cold press watercolor paper.  9x12 or 10x14 (Fabriano is a good student quality; Arches is the best but can be pricey.)

Painters tape not masking.

Board: A stiff board to tape your watercolor paper; can be plastic, or corrugated board

Paint palette with reservoirs to put paint and a large area for mixing

Plastic cups for water

Paper towels

Pencils HB, or H 

Eraser: Kneaded or soft eraser
