Join us for a whimsical and colorful exploration of the medium of watercolor in our Winter themed class. We will review the fundamentals of color mixing, the color wheel, hue, value & chroma. Painting a variety of subject matter we will learn wet on wet techniques, color blending, the basics of composition and much more. No experience necessary.
Watercolor paint - basic colors, a warm and cool red, yellow and blue is all you really need, but bring more if you have them. There are many brands, I like Winsor Newton & Daniel Smith. Suggested colors would be Cadmium Red Light, Alizarin Crimson, Cadmium Yellow Medium, Lemon Yellow, Ultramarine Blue, Cobalt Blue. Nice to have is Payne’s Gray/Indigo, Yellow Ochre, Burnt Sienna, Undersea Green (by Daniel Smith). You do not need to get every color! I will have paints for you to try in class and you can see what you like.
White plastic palette, the larger the better. Some people use a flat plastic serving tray.
Watercolor Paper, 140 lbs or more. 8 x 10 or larger is a good size
Watercolor Brushes - I like rounds size 12, 10, 8, 6 & 2, but you can get by with just two round brushes, size 10 & size 6. These sizes refer to Princeton Snap brushes, different manufacturers use different sizing.
A 1” flat brush
Multiple containers for water
Spray bottle for water (an old pump hairspray bottle works well)
HB pencil, eraser.
Paper towels
Scrap watercolor paper for testing colors etc.
Here are a variety of options for paint, paper, brushes and miscellaneous items as it can get expensive. You do not have to buy everything!
Watercolor Paint
Less Expensive:
Winsor & Newton Cotman is student grade paint is a less expensive way to get started. The pocket set of 12 has plenty of colors to start. You may want to get an additional palette as the mixing area in this set is very small. Some people even use a plastic white plate or platter found at a home goods store. Watercolor set is approximately $22
