Come learn the fundamentals of metalsmithing in this 2.5-hour weekly class. Acquire all the necessary skills to create your own unique pieces of jewelry. The focus will be on developing basic fabrication techniques to form copper and brass metal into creative designs. No experience is necessary. The class is for the pure novice or the beginner who wants to improve their metalwork skills in piercing, sawing, filing, riveting, texturing, and stone-setting with cold connections. Course fee: $125. Materials fee $25.
Materials to Bring:
- Mask for dust
- Plastic safety glasses
- A small sketchbook & pencil
- An apron
- Wear clothing you don’t care about—you will get dirty!
Brief Syllabus
Week 1: General introduction to tools and safety and learning how to anneal metal with a butane torch.
Week 2: Intro to texturing. Create a copper bracelet and use texturing hammers to add dimension to your design.
Week 3: Design an original pendant and learn how to saw, pierce, and file metal.
Week 4: Learn how to rivet layers of different metals to create a unique three-dimensional pendant.
Week 5: Set a stone in an original pendant by using cold connections and experimenting with tab-settings.
