Intro to Jewelry Making

Come learn the fundamentals of metalsmithing in this 2.5-hour weekly class. Acquire the necessary skills to create your own unique pieces of jewelry. The focus will be on developing basic fabrication techniques to form copper and brass metal into creative designs. No experience is necessary. The class is for novices or beginners who want to improve their metalwork skills in piercing, sawing, filing, riveting, texturing, and stone-setting with cold connections. Course fee: $125. Materials fee $25.
Materials to Bring (PRINTABLE)
- Mask for dust
- Plastic safety glasses
- A small sketchbook & pencil
- An apron
- Wear clothing you don’t care about—you will get dirty!
Brief Syllabus
Week 1: General introduction to tools and safety. Create a copper bracelet and use texturing hammers to add dimension to your design
Week 2: Design a pierced medallion by learning how to saw, pierce, and file metal.
Week 3: Learn how to rivet to attach several layers of metals together to create a unique three-dimensional pendant.
Week 4: Set a stone by using cold connections and tab-settings in an original piece of jewelry.
