Acrylic Afternoons Session I
with Heather Bennett
6 Thursdays | Jan. 8 - Feb. 12 | 2:00pm-4:00 pm |Materials List
All Levels Welcome | Fee $125
Sign up for this popular class and join a relaxing atmosphere where all skill levels are welcome! Learn or "brush"-up on the basic techniques of acrylic painting. Students will have the opportunity to create a complete piece of artwork each class with the step by step guidance of the instructor. The class will paint from photos of landscapes, seascapes, and nature.
The course will cover proportion, composition, color mixing, blending, brush techniques, and provide painters with practical tips and tricks.
Materials List:
Acrylic paint and other supplies can be purchased at the following for very good prices:
Michaels, Blick (dickblick.com), Amazon.com, Jerry's Artarama (jerrysartaroma.com)
Brushes: Inexpensive acrylic brush set (flat and round shaped, various sizes from an inch to a quarter inch wide.)
Acrylic Paint: Brand names are Golden, Liquitex. (Michael’s brand is Artist’s Loft) Colors you will need: Phthalo Blue, Titanium White, Mars Black, Raw Sienna, Brilliant Yellow, Deep Red.
Canvas: 6 pack 12x16 stretched canvases (Michael’s seems to have the best price)
Other Tools: A palette (you can use paper plates or buy a reusable plastic one), rags or paper towels, palette knife, small spray bottle (for water.)
Always wear old clothes, coveralls or an apron that can get dirty. You’ll need a way to safely transport wet paintings, as there is no storage at the JSAC. One option is to bring a cardboard box or a flat piece of cardboard large enough to put a painting on without the wet surface touching anything.
Authentic Collage Session I
with Heather Bennett
Six Thursdays |Jan. 8-Feb. 12 | 6:00 to 8:00 pm | Fee $125
Join Heather Bennett at the JSAC for the opportunity to learn the true meaning of collage! What most people think of as a collage is actually more of a vision board: cutting out images of things we want or like and putting them all together. However, a true collage is the act of taking images of existing elements or objects and creating new elements or objects from those images. We'll explore color, composition, perspective, and Surrealism.
Supply List: Images - old magazines, books, photographs, calenders, or quality printed images from the internet. Mod Podge (matte, unless you want your collages glossy) Glue brushes Substrate or material to adhere images: canvas board, canvas paper, wood board, or found/garage sale materials such as mirrors, existing glass frames, or signs (at least 8x10 or larger.)

Watercolor and/or Gouache Paint
Basic colors, a warm and cool red, yellow and blue is all you really need, but bring more if you have them. There are many brands, I like Winsor Newton & Daniel Smith. Suggested colors: Cadmium Red Light, Alizarin Crimson, Cadmium Yellow Medium, Lemon Yellow, Ultramarine Blue, Cobalt Blue.
Nice to have: Payne’s Gray/Indigo, Yellow Ochre, Burnt Sienna, Undersea Green (by Daniel Smith). You do not need a complete set of both gouache and watercolor.
Get what interests you most and I will have both mediums to try in class.
Other Tools/Materials:
White plastic palette, the larger the better. Some people use a flat plastic serving tray.
Watercolor Paper, 140 lbs or more. 8 x 10 or larger is a good size
Watercolor Brushes - I like rounds size 12, 10, 8, 6 & 2, but you can get by with just two round brushes, size 10 & size 6. These sizes refer to Princeton Snap brushes, different manufacturers use different sizing.
A 1” flat brush
Multiple containers for water
Spray bottle for water (an old pump hairspray bottle works well)
HB pencil, eraser.
Paper towels
Scrap watercolor paper for testing colors etc.
There are a variety of options for paint, paper, brushes and miscellaneous items as it can get expensive. You do not have to buy everything!
Watercolor Paint
Less Expensive:
Winsor & Newton Cotman is student grade paint is a less expensive way to get started. The pocket set of 12 has plenty of colors to start. You may want to get an additional palette as the mixing area in this set is very small. Some people even use a plastic white plate or platter found at a home goods store. Watercolor set is approximately $22
